Despite only turning twenty-four last month, Saints’ new signing Leon Pryce
has already made his mark in his rugby league since he burst onto the scene as a seventeen year-old in 1999.
He was
already a potential star, having captained England Schools, but the lower leagues and amateur game is littered with youngsters
who were sure to play for Great Britain.
However, Pryce took his opportunity in Super League in 1999, and was voted
Young Player of the Year by the Rugby League Writers while also making his England debut against France.
The following
season he played for Great Britain in the World Cup, and has also featured in a Test series against New Zealand. Injury kept
him out of last year’s Gillette Tri-Nations tournament, but he is once again in Brian Noble’s plans, having been
named in the 40-man squad along with nine Saints.
Earlier this season he completed a career century of club and representative
tries, of which 92 were for Bradford Bulls. His eight tries in representative matches include two for Great Britain.
Saints
coach Daniel Anderson stated: “This is a key signing for the club as we believe Leon can be developed further to establish
himself as one of the best players in Super League, while also providing great versatility for the Saints.”
Pryce
has signed a three-year contract that will keep him a Saint until the end of 2008.
